Second Chance

Second Chance Ryan Bell, 14, from South London was thrown out of school for being "rude, disruptive, and unmanagable". However, thanks to a brave new Channel Four documentary series, 'Second Chance', Ryan's life has been transformed from a life of roaming the streets to top student in the exclusive Benedictene run Downside Abbey.

"When I was 13 I ran into trouble myself, and if my parents hadn't sent me away to school in the Carribean I know that I'd have never gone to University. What we need to consider now is how other kids can have this opportunity."
Series creator amd ex London mayoral candidate Trevor Phillips

"It would have been totaly wrong if we had simply said after a year, right, that's the programme over, let's put you back into your other life"
Ambreen Hameed- Producer of Second Chance.
Second Chance
Pepper Productions agreed to support Ryan Bell until he finishes his GCSE's in 2004.

The Second Chance series was an intense experience for all involved - Ambreen (the producer), Rena (the editor), and myself.

We had all watched the footage and had to fight back tears, often unsuccessfully. It became apparent that each of the three programmes in the series had to have it's own distinct identity - and that they were going to be brutally honest. Ultimately that meant I had to become a different person to score each. It was not enough for me to look at the film and portray what was there; I had to portray what was not on the screen, the duality - the hope and despiration which each film has.

Most of the music I composed for the series was written away from the screen and my studio, walking around London - Brixton, Stockwell, and the surrounding areas, trying to gauge my own feelings and emotions - thinking about Ryan, Tammy, and the Kids Club, (episodes 1, 2 + 3 respectively).
